I entered the learning and development profession because helping others to succeed is my passion. Many years ago I had the opportunity to build a Learning and development team. I needed to choose between hiring experienced training professionals or tapping into the really smart, ambitious and talented folks from the business. I chose the latter. I built my my team by complimenting existing business skills with design and facilitation expertise. As a result, our team was uniquely positioned to provide the best training for our business! As a leader, this is what convinced me that coaching skills are what’s most important in developing successful teams.
Fast-forward five years; I accepted a new role at a new company that wasn’t a great fit. That experience led me to uncover coaching as my passion. While in this role, I performed a short exercise every day, one I now encourage my clients to do. I jotted down what gave me energy each day and what drained me – and a trend soon emerged. My energy spiked when I helped employees and peers discover their own solutions, and I saw them flourish as a result. I decided then and there, that I would pursue coaching full time and gain the education and experience required to be a really good coach.
“First get the right people on the bus, the wrong people off the bus and the right people in the right seats-and then they figure out where to drive it” – Jim Collins, Good to Great
As a leader and coach, I can amplify that passion through managing teams and helping leaders develop their teams. I know that when you create a happy workplace, people will produce results! Establishing trust, showing you care and managing one person at a time are the keys to employee engagement.
